Medici Chapels and San Lorenzo Church: Private Guided Tour in Florence
Discover the magnificent Medici Chapels and San Lorenzo Church in Florence with a knowledgeable private guide. Explore the profound history and unparalleled art of these iconic landmarks.
Just a few steps from the Duomo, the Medici settled in the quarter that is now the San Lorenzo/San Marco neighborhood in the late 14th century. From this strategic location, their financial and political power grew during the 15th century, establishing them as the absolute lords of the city and leading them to the title of Dukes of Florence and Grand Dukes of Tuscany in the 16th century.
The complex of San Lorenzo is more than a religious site; it is a monumental testament to the ambition of a single family. As you walk through the Old Sacristy, you witness the dawn of the Renaissance through Brunelleschi’s precise geometry. This was the Medici’s private parish, a space where art and architecture were used to solidify their divine right to rule Florence. Understanding the shift from the medieval quarter to this Renaissance masterpiece is essential to grasping how the Medici shaped the very DNA of the city.

Here you find the first Medici Palace, commissioned by Cosimo the Elder, and a church with burial chapels, the famous Medici Chapels, dedicated to the family members that are within the Renaissance Church of San Lorenzo, designed and built by Renaissance architect and genius Filippo Brunelleschi, and amazing chapel and library by the great master Michelangelo and the majestic Princes Chapel, the burial place of the Medici Grand Dukes.

Inside the New Sacristy, we encounter Michelangelo at the height of his sculptural prowess. Here, the master worked not just as a sculptor, but as an architect, breaking traditional rules to create a space that feels alive with tension. The allegorical figures of Night and Day, and Dawn and Dusk, draped over the tombs, represent the relentless passage of time—a theme Michelangelo brooded over deeply. As your specialist guide, I will help you “read” the marble, pointing out the deliberate unfinished touches (non-finito) that reveal the artist’s internal struggle and his departure from the classicism of his youth.
