Santa Croce Grand Tour: Explore Florence’s Franciscan Heart
Piazza Santa Croce and its surrounding neighborhood are truly a magical place. Colorful, joyful, and dynamic, this district often feels like “Florence’s playground.” In its expansive square, locals and visitors alike gather to relax, play, and browse unique seasonal markets. It is the perfect starting point for our Santa Croce Grand Tour, a journey through the spiritual and intellectual soul of the Renaissance.

As you wander through the cobblestone streets, you will discover that every corner reveals a story, from ancient artisan workshops to the vibrant echoes of the city’s most historic sporting traditions.
The Basilica: Michelangelo & Galileo’s Final Resting Place
The Basilica of Santa Croce, the largest Franciscan church in the world, is one of the ultimate masterpieces of Italian Gothic architecture. Beyond its architectural grandeur, it serves as the “Pantheon of Italian Glories.” This sacred space is the final resting place for some of history’s greatest minds, including Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Machiavelli, and Rossini. Walking through the nave, you aren’t just looking at tombs; you are walking through a timeline of human achievement.
During the summer months, the piazza outside transforms into a sand-covered arena for the Calcio Storico Fiorentino. This brutal and beautiful mix of soccer, rugby, and wrestling is a tradition dating back centuries—the very sport that inspired modern-day football.
A Full Florentine Experience (2 to 4 Hours)
Set in one concentrated location, this tour provides a comprehensive look at Florentine life without the need for long transit. Within a few minutes’ walk, you will explore an incredible square, a world-renowned church, and several hidden gems tucked away in the narrow medieval streets.
Our journey begins with an extended historical introduction in the square. Your guide will decode the 19th-century facade and explain how the foundations laid by Arnolfo di Cambio evolved into the monument you see today. Once inside, we shift our focus to the interior’s spatial design and the incredible Bardi and Peruzzi Chapels, where you will admire centuries-old frescoes by Giotto. These paintings revolutionized Western art by introducing emotion and three-dimensional space long before the Renaissance fully bloomed.

Beyond the Nave: The Pazzi Chapel & Leather School
The tour continues as we exit the main church to visit the unique Pazzi Chapel. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, this structure is a masterclass in Renaissance symmetry and geometric perfection. It remains one of the most serene spots in all of Florence.
To experience the living traditions of the city, we will visit the famous Scuola del Cuoio (School of Leather). Tucked behind the monastery, this is where you can witness master artisans at work, continuing a trade that has defined Florence for generations. It is a rare opportunity to see how high-quality Florentine leather is crafted by hand.
Inside this hidden sanctuary, you will observe the meticulous precision required to create world-class goods, offering a profound connection to the centuries-old heritage and artisanal mastery that continue to make Florence a global icon for luxury and unparalleled craftsmanship.
A Taste of Florence
No “Grand Tour” is complete without indulging the senses. We conclude our experience with a curated wine tasting. You will sample authentic Chianti and other prestigious Tuscan wines, paired with local specialties. This is a moment to relax, ask your guide final questions, and savor the flavors of the region.
