Pistoia: A Medieval Treasure Near Florence

Located just 30 km northwest of Florence, Pistoia is one of the most enchanting yet undiscovered cities in Tuscany. Its rich history stretches from Etruscan origins to the modern era, offering a perfectly preserved medieval atmosphere within its ancient city walls.

The heart of the city is the Piazza del Duomo, a unique architectural jewel. Here, the famous Cathedral of San Zeno stands surrounded by magnificent historic buildings, including the Palazzo del Comune, the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo dei Vescovi, and the striking Baptistery.

During our Pistoia Tour, we will go inside to admire the outstanding Altar of St. James—a masterpiece of Gothic and Renaissance silversmithing featuring 628 intricate figures and weighing nearly a ton. We will also explore the Sala, once the seat of the Lombard viceroy and later a bustling center for free trade. Today, it remains a vibrant marketplace where we can sample local delicacies. Finally, it’s impossible to resist the ‘Birignoccoluti’ (local comfits); these traditional sweets have been a Pistoian specialty since the Middle Ages and are a true taste of local history.

Prato: Art, History, and Culinary Traditions

As the third-largest city in Central Italy—following Rome and Florence—Prato is a hidden treasure trove of artistic and culinary wealth. Our exploration begins at the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, where we will admire the recently restored and breathtaking Filippo Lippi frescoes. We will also view the famous external pulpit by Donatello, an Early Renaissance masterpiece that remains one of the most significant works of its kind.

We will also visit the church of Santa Maria delle Carceri; commissioned by Lorenzo de’ Medici, this Greek cross plan masterpiece is said to have inspired Brunelleschi’s famous Pazzi Chapel in Florence.

To conclude the experience, we will visit the Castello dell’Imperatore, the only castle built by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen in this region. Of course, no visit to Prato is complete without a stop at a legendary pasticceria to taste the world-famous ‘Cantuccini di Prato’. These iconic almond cookies are a Tuscan must-try—don’t miss out!
